Description: | A mountain ride during our July 4th trip to Boise. The plan was to ride the Bear Run trail that goes from Pilot Peak near Mores Pass to Idaho City, but, as a loop.
Since it was hot with some threats of storms, I started early, rolled out of Idaho City at 8am. Rode the Highway 21 to Mores Pass, about 14 miles and 2000 ft. of climbing. It was not too hot and the traffic was light in the morning so the highway part was quite pleasant. The dirt road of Mores Pass towards Pilot Peak is not super steep, but it's steep enough to get the heart pumping and to look forward to the end. It was a while, though, till I got to the pass below Pilot peak, about 3.5 miles later. The part to Pilot Peak had several steep sections, but, was not all that bad. The peak has some great views and a house with bunch of antennas and solar panels. Then I hopped on the Bear Run road, an ATV track that follows the ridge towards southwest. There were a couple of steep short climbs but otherwise it was going down. The surface of all these dirt roads was fairly smooth, but threre were many ruts and at some sections it was sandy so one could not bomb it down too hard. It took me almost two hours to go down the 17 miles of mostly downhill, but I also spent some times enjoying the views, which were great along many parts of the trail in the upper elevations. The lower part got graded recently and was fairly loose which was not that great, but, overall, a great ride. |
