Phoenix Mountains is a small (ca. 10 miles long) range about 5 miles north of downtown. It's surprisingly well preserved, i.e., it's all open space with numerous trails that go up the jagged peaks, and around them. Many of these trails are not easily rideable, which I experienced firsthand, however, major trail going east-west, trail 100, is reasonable, there is only several harder sections along its 10 mile course through the mountains. I started at the Squaw Peak park, rode up several trails (partially hiked) to trail 100, then on 100 to its western end, then on 7th Ave to Canal Path, which is another urban bikeway along a water canal (supposedly pretty long path - tens of miles). I rode on that about 6 miles to 32nd Street, and on that back to the mountains, and on trails 8A and 8B back to the car. The last 2 trails were quite good in the lower parts, but I had to hike for a while in the saddle areas.
Overall, a pretty decent riding area in the middle of the sprawling metropolis.
