I spent one day in the Sedona area on the way to Phoenix. The plan was to combine several rides from Cosmic Ray guidebook so that it formed a decent whole day ride. I was relatively lucky, since a storm dumped several inches of rain all over Arizona two days ago, which made the trails perfect - the sandy and gravely surface was wet, but not muddy. A rare treat in the desert. I started in chilly morning off Morgan road. Went on Broken Arrow trail, probably the most technical of the day. Then on Llama Trail towards Courthouse Rock, around the rock, then Courthouse loops to the trailhead at Oak Creek, from there on Bell Rock Pathway (really a pathway - wide like a dirt road), onto Templeton Trail around Cathedral Rock, dropping to Oak Creek, on Baldwin Trail to Verde Valley Road, back to Oak Creek. There I thought to cross the creek to ride around the Airport Mesa. However, it was quite swelled after the rains, and there was no bridge (although, there is a foot bridge at low level). So, I went back on Templeton Trail to Bell Rock Pathway, and then back through several subdivision roads and Mystic Trail. Then I rode the dirt road to Submarine Rock (quite a rip-of - it's hidden in the bushes) and back on Broken Arrow Trail in reverse. Overall, I was quite impressed with the trails, Broken Arrow was very similar to Gooseberry Mesa, the rest more like Southern California in red, with all the manzanita and other warmer weather bushes. | |
