Description: | A short cold afternoon ride in the southeastern part of the Reno valley, idea for which I again got at greatbasinbicycles.com. Started a bit off McCarran Blvd on a relatively short lived bike laned road. Then screwed around the neighborhood a bit and followed a dirt road around bunch of gravel mines. Then climbed up east, and again north through several thrashy spots with shot out cars, fridges, etc. Some more rocky doubletracks on the west side of the valley lead to the road that leads further up to the ridge to the west. There's quite a maze of doubletracks in the area and I first did not take the right one. I could have also saved myself some climbing if I headed west on the top of the hill under the power lines, instead of descending down. The climb to the ridge was not too bad. I also saw a herd of wild horses. On the top of the ridge starts singletrack that switchbacks down on a relatively loose dirt surface - but it's stable most of the time. The singletrack was fairly nice and was a good payback for frustrating rocky dirt road access. At the bottom is an open space park where people walk their dogs, etc. There are also some singletracks there, but, the sun was getting down so I rather headed back to the car where I got right when the sun went over the Mt. Rose foothills.
Bottom line - not that great of a ride due to rocky access and chilly weather, but, better than nothing. |
