| Description: | First ride during Supercomputing 07 conference in Reno, Nv. The realization was questionable because of advertised storm. Fortunately, the storm slowed down and came in the late Saturday afternoon. Counting on this, I left SLC at 5am and in 7 hours, at 12 pm SLC time, or 11 am Reno time, pulled in at the "trailhead", which is really a dirt road going off newly developed sports complex. I got an idea for this ride from Great Basin Bicycles, http://greatbasinbicycles.com/, which has very good descriptions of the trails in the area. It was fairly cloudy and cool, but, the sun did peek out once in a while. I headed up south-east up the dirt road. About 1/2 mile up, the singletrack goes off on the right. I took that and climbed dozens of switchbacks to the ridge. The trail was pretty rocky, but, mostly rideable. To my surprise, there was a sign on the ridge pointing to a loop. So, I went west and circled around through several pretty technical spots and a lots of rocky singletrack. Then turned up at the pipeline road, and, followed a dirt road loop north-east through dry lake beds (where are supposed to be petroglyphs - I was chasing the weather so I did not look for them) and back on pipeline road to the ridge. Then followed some more rocky singletrack climbing to the highest point, and back down to the car. The singletrack downhill was actually pretty nice. On top of that, I pulled to the car and packed right when it started sprinkling, which made a fine conclusion of a well spent first ride in Reno. | |
