Description: | Another of NOT recommended rides. Would be a good, long hike, though. One can ride with a couple of pushes under Black Mountain. Then follows about 1000 vertical ft hike-a-bike to the first summit. The ridge after that is rideable only first 200 m or so, the rest is quite rocky, locally exposed with many scrambling sections. After the main Black Mountain summit, trail follows east another 1/4 mile or so and then drops as Smugglers Gap Trail into City Creek Cyn. About 70% of that is rideable, the rest is steep and loose. Also, about half of the trail is very overgrown. The trail ends about 1/2 mile above the Rotary Park gate, I was so wasted at this point that I just rode down the road (would be nice to finish on a trail that parallels City Creek road on the north side, but, it's closed to bikes).
It turns out that the exact loop that I did is a course for annual running race Wahsatch Steeplechase. On this page, they claim that some sections of the ridge have 5.4 climbing rating, so, the climb-a-bike call is justified.
