Name: | Fish Lake Loop |
|
Description: | This ride combines several trails to form loop around Fish Lake. I more-less followed the ride from Gregg Bromka's Mountain Bike Utah book, with modifications due to rainy conditions. Started at the Mackinaw Campground and rode the Lakeshore Trail south around the southern tip of the lake. The trail on the west side is flat and gravel covered, it gets a bit more rocky on the south side. As one gets on the east side of the lake, the trail climbs first moderately and then with many steep pitches and switchbacks up Mytoge Mountain. About 1/2 way up is a first overlook in a small pass, then some more climbing to second overlook and flat and down to third and fourth. By this time thundeclouds were all over and it sprinkled a bit. I followed the advice and did not go down Lakeshore Trail on the 4th overlook and instead took a dirt road around Crater Lakes to Porcupine Draw Trail. The upper part of this one is very eroded and not really rideable (about 150 yds). Then follows occasionally hairy descent and some hidden traps (one of which send me flying over the bars). Then one gets to a trail junction with xxx trail that eventually crosses Lake Creek and gets on the Lake Creek Trailhead. From here, one can take Lakeshore Trail back to the start point. Another option is to ride the road back. I opted for the second option, since I spent about 1/2 hour at the trailhead restroom waiting over the rain storm and did not feel like taking a risk in possible mud on the trail. Overall a quite nice and adventurous ride, though not really recommended during the summer monsoon season. | |
