Description: | Day one of our trip to Valtice on the southeastern tip of Moravia, about 2km from Austria. The plan was to head south to explore some Austrian side roads. There are numerous marked bike routes both on the Czech and Austrian side, the advantage of the richer Austrian side being that more of the field roads with almost no traffic are paved.
We headed from Valtice and right before the border there is an old Leichtenstein building which is part of the whole Lednice-Valtice area. We checked that out and then crossed the border. We stayed on the main (but not too busy) road to Schrattenberg and Herrnsbaumgarten (the town names are quite funny, the last one translates as Lord's orchard). Then we turned off to smaller roads and got to the Zaya river valley at Ebersdorf. Then we followed the trail to Neuseidel, and watched a military transport on the rail along the way. In Neuseidel we had a lunch in a small park right next to some burger joint which was frequented by local youth. Then we headed back north to Reintal and from there to Katzelsdorf and across the border on a field road. This was not an official border crossing, but, with both Czech R. and Austria being in the Schengen zone, noone cared. So, we verified that the borders are now indeed opened. After that, it was just a short roll back to Valtice. |
