| Description: | A big ride of the season. I realized that there is a sub 100 mile loop that can be done from SLC and not travel on too busy roads (well, with some exception). So, I went up Emigration Cyn, dropped down towards I-80 but went towards the golf course and up it on a trail discovered in the spring to the Lambs Canyon I-80 exit. Then up I-80 for the 4 miles or so to the summit. Then hopped onto the frontage road and through Kimball Junction and on to the Rail Trail. Took the Rail Trail to Wanship, this was quite bumpy ride, for some reason it felt more bumpy than I remember - the Rail Trail has fairly coarse gravel surface which is not too great for bikes - softer gravel would make more sense (hint to Utah State Parks). Perhaps better option would be to ride to Browns Canyon, that would probably add the 8 miles to make it a century (and be able to use road bike all the way - well, in that case one would have to ride up I-80 to Lambs Canyon). Anyway, in Wanship I hopped on Rte 32 and it was a fairly fast cruise (albeit some small hills) to Echo and Henefer. Here I was finally out of water and to my surprise, there was no store or gas station. The LDS church came to the rescue, it was open and bustling at 12.30am, so, I refilled there and headed up Hwy 65 to East Canyon. The climb up to Big Mountain Pass was quite hellish as it was hot, I was tired, and there was a headwind. The descent and ride back home was tiring too, but, at least, it was mostly downhill. Overall, a good ride, it would help if I did not get tired at the end, but, it was a good exploration of a few roads I haven't been on. | |
