Name:Loop northeast of Brtov
Description:Another day with morning chores so I set out in the afternoon. I continued with the pattern of looping out of Brtov in different directions. This time I headed to Boskovice through Lysice and Skalice. Boskovice is a sizeable regional center (ca. 20000 inhabitants) and has a lot of shops, etc. I was in search of a pharmacy, which are quite tricky to get to since they tend to have limited business hours. The one next to the hospital was already closed (open from 8am to 4pm), the one on the town square was still open, since that one is up from 8am to 5pm with an hour for a lunch break. The stuff I ended up buying cost about twice as much as what it'd cost in the US, so, talk about customer friendly service. Of course, most people go there to get prescription which is relatively inexpensive but I still think Czech pharmacies (mostly privately owned) are a rip-off since they have the monopoly and are not shy to use it. Anyway, after the pharmacy blues I headed further east from Boskovice up a wooded hill to the Drahany highlands which tower about 1000 ft above the Svitava river valley. I went on the high plateau to a village of Sloup, one of the famous spots in the Moravian Carst, with caves, etc. Then I turned back west and headed home. I stopped by the castle in Rajec when we were married since it was right beside the road, and then headed through road construction between Rajec and Boritov back to Brtov. I was wondering if when they do the road construction there it'd be worth it to stick in a bike lane since that road is flat and has a lot of cycling potential for people commuting to Blansko, but, I guess Czech R. is still in the virgin age of car usage and they are still keen on driving, so, the officials don't even think about bikes when building roads. Perhaps I could try to e-mail some elected official to see what they have to say (if they reply - my guess is that representative democracy in Czech is not as strong as in the US). I'll keep you posted.
