Name:Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve
Description:Located near the coast east of La Jolla, the preserve encompases about 5 mile stretch of the canyon. There are two trailheads, one at the lower part off Sorrento Valley Blvd. and the other in the upper part on Black Mountain Road. However, one can ride to the place from many subdivisions that circle around the canyon. In the preserve itself, biking is allowed only on dirt roads. That includes the main road, that I rode from the bottom trailhead to the top, and a few others on the north side of the creek and into the hills. I was quite unimpressed until I got up to the north hills on a dirt road around electric poles. Then rode several sections of singletrack (as noted on the map) and descended back to the canyon. Then I rode about 2 miles down canyon, and back up in a vain search for a creek crossing. The crossing that I finally used was the first one going up from the lower trailhead.
Overall, I rode about 9 miles of decent singletrack, which was not too bad. Next time, I would not bother riding all the way up and also would not ride down canyon once descended from the hills.
