Description: | For the spare day of our trip I came up with an idea of combining two ferries that run on Lake Champlain and riding between them on the western New York state side and eastern Vermont side. So, there we were waiting for the 10:10 ferry from Burlington to Port Kent, NY. This is the longest ferry on the lake and takes about an hour to cross the 10 miles distance. The western shore of the lake is more hilly, which we could see once we started closing in, with Shelly getting worried and stating that it looks mountaineous. There was a decent hill climbing out of Port Kent, a sleepy small village on the lake. The roads on the west side were not all that busy, except for Hwy 22 which we only rode part of and instead decided to take a longer route on more quiet roads. It was quite up and down, with some hills being quite steep so it was good we only had a daypack with us. About 2/3 way through the New York portion, we stopped at a farmstead from 1812, there were no people but a few chicken and sheep. Most of the New York part was in the forest, although on the south side there was more farms. Essex, NY, the terminal of the other ferry, is also quite small but there was a place we could buy a sandwich and an ice cream shop. The ferry from Essex runs every 30 minutes and is only 3 miles long, so, I finished my ice cream on the boat. Back on the Vermont side, it was riding through farm country, there were some hills as well but not bad. We ended up getting back only about 5pm, the whole loop was a bit over 50 miles, somewhat more than I thought from looking at the map, but a good conclusion of our trip.
Hned s Port Kentu jsme nico vystoupali a pak cesta vedla poevážni lesy nahoru a dolu, vitšinou po málo frekventovaných silnicích. |
