Get NIC date ReadMe

Purpose

  • To list into files the contents of several directories and get "date" files on the NIC server. Unlike the OSO server where directories are created with the date in the name, the NIC server utilizes a rotating directory. This means that one must check "date" files or the date on the file when using the command dir. Currently, directory listings are only obtained for the RUCS. "Date" files are retrieved for the RUC, Eta, NGM, Ensemble, and MesoEta. Getting the directory listings and "date" files with this script reduces the number of "hits" on the NIC server.

    Initiated

  • Cron job on atmos
  • 03,33 * * * * /home/atmos/u/ldm/oper/models/date/get_nic_date.csh
  • This script can be run by ldm on ANY machine.

    Problems

  • Sometimes an ftp will get hung. Simply check for old ftps on atmos and kill the ftp. This will not affect the performance of the script.
  • When the NIC server is down, the ftp(s) will not get through. You just have to wait until it comes back up.
