Meteo 2810: Undergraudate Seminar
Philosophy and Objectives
The purpose of Meteorology 2810 is to provide information to students concerning the meteorology major and profession. In addition to an introduction to department facilities, a variety of meteorologists and individuals in related fields give informal talks concerning their professional activities. We will also travel to several different venues to see work environments. The primary goals are to educate students about the types of careers that are available in environmental fields as well as the societal impacts of weather and climate.
Format
Seminars are nominally held 12:55-1:45 Wednesday in the INSCC auditorium. However, the schedule this semester is a bit more complicated because of tours of off campus facilities.
We will be visiting several off-campus facilities during the semester that will require transportation. We will carpool as needed leaving as early as 12:30 and typically returning by 2:30PM. If you have conflicts with classes or work immediately following the tour, let me know in advance. If you can not attend the tour, then you will need to obtain and read an assignment and write a short report due the next week. Because of the extended length of the tours, seminars/tours will not be held on some dates.
Students are also strongly encouraged to attend weather discussions, which are held in 490 INSCC on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the same class period. Unless you have a class conflict, you are expected to attend at least one weather discussion during the semester.
Makeup Assignments
It is your responsibility to attend all seminars and tours and let me know in advance if you are unable to attend. If you miss two or more for legitimate reasons, then you are to complete one of the following for each missed seminar or tour after the first up to a maximum of 3:- Challenges of our Changing Atmosphere
- Careers in the Atmospheric Sciences
- Bachelor's Degree in Atmospheric Science
- Recent Trends
- Bridging the gap between theory and applications
- AMS membership
Grading
Credit/no credit based on attendance (and short reports, if seminars or tours are missed). You are expected to attend all Wednesday seminars and tours or make arrangements in advance for makeup reading assignments.ADA Accomodations
The University of Utah seeks to provide equal access to its programs, services, and activities for people with disabilities. If you will need accommodations in the class, reasonable prior notice needs to be given to the Center for Disability services, 162 Olpin Union Building, 581-5020 (V/TDD). CDS will work with you and the instructor to make arrangement for accommodations. All written information in this course can be made available in alternative format with prior notification to the Center for Disability Services.
Tentative Seminar Schedule
Please be courteous to the invited speakers and arrive at the start of class (12:55 PM) and stay until the seminar is over (typically 1:45 PM).
When we take tours, it will be very important to arrange transportation and be on time to leave. The tours typically extend the class period until 2:30.
