Meteorology 3410: Assignment 8
Due October 20
Purpose:
A goal of this course has been to become familiar with sources of information related to the atmospheric sciences.
The final assignment for the first half of the semester is to read and review carefully one article on a subject of interest to you found in one of the technical journals published by the American Meteorological Society: e.g., Weather and Forecasting, Monthly Weather Review, or Journal of Climate.
This is not a book report of the sort where you provide a lot of personal opinion on what the author meant; rather, you are to review in your own words (without copying any of the original text):
- background of the research, i.e., what is the context of the study?
- purpose of the research
- research methodology
- results
- conclusions reached by the author about the results
Assigment
-
Go to the AMS web page to see the types of journals that are available.
-
Go to the library and look through the journals of the AMS for the past year.
- Very important Find an article that is intellegible and of interest to you and is well written:
- it is not necessary to select a very theoretical paper or an overly long one
- it must be an article- not a note or correspondence and not a review article
- look for a paper that has a good intro that provides some context
- make sure the article actually describes some significant research (i.e., there should be several figures, tables or other means to summarize results)
- Your review should contain the following:
- title/author/affiliation
- truncated version of original abstract in your own words that summarizes the research
- couple paragraphs on context of research
- 1 paragraph that describes purpose
- few paragraphs to a page on methodology
- 1+ page on research (can include copy of most significant figure or table)
- summary of conclusions
-
Your review should not contain the following:
- why you chose the paper
- that you liked or disliked it
- your opinion on the validity of the research
- what you did or did not understand
-
Your review should be:
- typed: double spaced lines. 12 point font.
- proofed for spelling, grammar, and punctuation
- make sure someone else reads your review before turning it in (make sure that person knows something about grammar and spelling)
