Snow Temperature Sensor. Assignment 2. Due January 21

Purpose: To aid in the design of a portable instrument to measure snow temperature.

To transition from the sled mounted to portable system requires the design of two major components: 1) backpack housing for the battery, logger, GPS unit, and display and 2) mounting IR sensor on ski or on a boom around the skiier's waist. The class will be divided into 2 groups. By January 16, each group is to present a preliminary design for each of these components. A decision will then be made as to which designs are most practical, efficient, etc. Your design should include sketches of the layout, and sources and cost of materials.

Backpack The backpack most be designed to house the battery, logger, GPS unit, and display in such a manner that all the electronics and wires are protected from damage. Distribution of weight and other ergonomic details ae also important.

Sensor mount The sensor could be mounted at the front of a ski or on a boom fastened around the waist. The sensor must be able to measure the conditions in the ski track and not become coated by water, snow, or ice. The sensor mount should not permanently damage a ski, i.e., no screws into the ski.
