Upper Air Analyses. Assignment 6. Due March 4
Purpose: to compute the geostrophic and gradient wind from a manual analysis.
Review the information on manual analyses of upper air charts in the Djuric text.
The charts in Assignment 5 will be used, i.e., 500 mb height at :
- 00z 24 February 04
- 12z 24 February 04
1. Using your 500 mb height analysis for 0000 UTC 24 February:

a. Compute the geostrophic wind speed and direction at OAK, INL, BMX, TFX, OTX, MAF, ALB.
b. Compute the gradient wind speed and direction at OAK, INL, BMX, TFX, OTX, MAF, ALB.
2. Repeat 1a and 1b for 1200 UTC 24 February

At which of the stations in 1 and 2 should the observed and gradient winds be sub or super geostrophic? Why?
