Kinematics of the Wind Field. Assignment 9. Due March 4

Review the information on kinematics in the Djuric text.

Isotachs and streamlines at 300 mb will be analyzed for 12z February 23.

• 1. Draw streamlines to the flow keeping in mind:
  • the goal is to provide enough information to describe the fluid motion; there is no set density of lines
  • the streamlines are everywhere parallel to the wind direction (an exception being if you believe the wind direction to be in error)
• 2. Draw isotachs of the 300 mb wind speed at an interval of 5 m/s keeping in mind:
  • the wind speed tends to vary more slowly along the streamlines than perpendicular to the streamlines
  • the wind speed can change rapidly to the left of the maximum wind and more gradually to the right
