Class Hours: MWF 10:45-11:35. March 29-April 28.

Classroom: EMCB 120 MW until April 7. 490 INSCC F until April 9 and MWF from April 12.

Grading: The course grade will be determined from class participation and completion of a project that entails writing codes to assimilate surface temperature observations.

You are encouraged to attend (but it is not required to do so) at least 1 weather discussion (Meteo 5810) per week (MWF 12:55-1:30 PM 490 INSCC).

Course follows loosely Atmospheric Modeling, Data Assimilation, and Predictability by Eugenia Kalnay. Reading assignments will be handed out.

  • Week 2. April 5-9 Introduction to least squares methods
  • Week 3. April 12-16 Optimum Interpolation
  • Week 4. April 19-23 Variational assimilation
  • Week 5. April 26-30 Kalman filters and adjoint approaches
  • Finals Week. Turn in project
