Internet Assignment: Economic Impacts of El Nino
Due: Tuesday April 7
Purpose:
The 1997-98 El Nino has affected the economies of many countries in
the tropics and mid-latitudes. Some of these impacts are quite direct, while others are not. In addition, El Nino has been blamed unnecessarily for
many weather-related disasters.
The focus of this assignment is to document the link between El Nino and economic impacts using information obtained via the Internet from reputable sources (major media outlets, online scientific journals and scientific sources, etc.).
- El Nino in the Tropics
- Identify a significant economic impact of El Nino on the economy of a country in the tropics (20N-20S) during 1997-98.
- Discuss the scientific basis for the impact: physical mechanisms for the link, evidence for the impact based on the current and past events
- Discuss the impact in terms of loss of life, property damage, economic infrastructure
- El Nino and Weather in the Mid-latitudes. Part 1
- Identify a perceived link between El Nino and economic impact on a country/region in the mid-latitudes (poleward of 30N) during 1997-98 that may have some scientific validity.
- Discuss the scientific basis for the perceived link: physical mechanisms for the link, evidence for the impact based on the current and past events
- Discuss the impact in terms of loss of life, property damage, economic infrastructure
- El Nino and Weather in the Mid-latitudes. Part 2
- Identify a perceived link between El Nino and economic impact on a country/region in the mid-latitudes (poleward of 30N) during 1997-98 that is unlikely to be a significant one.
- Discuss why there may not be a strong scientific basis for the perceived link
- Discuss the impact in terms of loss of life, property damage, economic infrastructure
Don't write a book on each section; a few paragraphs per section will be fine. Be sure to list the sources of information in terms of web addresses.
